Biography
Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was born September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas, into a family with deep athletic roots. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., pitched for nearly a decade in Major League Baseball, and Patrick grew up around clubhouses long before he ever stepped onto a football field. His mother Randi raised him alongside his younger brother Jackson, who has since built his own social media following. That baseball-adjacent childhood — spent shagging flies and studying the routines of professional athletes — would shape Mahomes's unusual, off-platform throwing style.
Mahomes attended Whitehouse High School in East Texas, where he was a three-sport standout in football, baseball, and basketball. He was recruited as a quarterback but also drew attention from MLB scouts as a pitcher — the Detroit Tigers even drafted him in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He chose football and Texas Tech, where he became one of the most prolific passers in FBS history. His 2016 junior season was a statistical masterpiece, headlined by a 734-yard, five-touchdown passing performance against Oklahoma that still stands among the most remarkable single games in college football.
The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to select Mahomes tenth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, then redshirted him for a full season behind veteran Alex Smith. That patience paid off immediately when he took over in 2018: Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, earning NFL MVP honors and becoming only the third quarterback ever to reach 50 passing touchdowns in a season. He has been one of the defining players of his era ever since, with Andy Reid's offense built entirely around his improvisational genius.
Mahomes has collected the full résumé of franchise-quarterback hardware. He is a three-time Super Bowl champion (LIV, LVII, LVIII), a three-time Super Bowl MVP, a two-time NFL MVP (2018, 2022), and the 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He has been selected to multiple Pro Bowls and named first-team All-Pro, and he has led the Chiefs to a run of consecutive AFC Championship appearances unmatched in the Super Bowl era. His ability to create off-platform, left-handed, no-look, and sidearm throws has made him one of the most imitated — and impossible to imitate — passers in NFL history.
Away from football, Mahomes is one of the most commercially active athletes in American sports. He is part of the ownership groups of the Kansas City Royals (MLB), Kansas City Current (NWSL), and Alpine F1 team, reflecting a deliberate strategy of diversifying into equity stakes rather than purely endorsement deals. He is a co-founder of the lifestyle and beverage brand 2PM Vodka, runs the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation focused on childhood health and wellness, and maintains long-term endorsement deals with State Farm, Adidas, Oakley, and others. He is also an avid golfer whose offseason rounds have become minor celebrity events.
Mahomes married Brittany Matthews — a former college soccer player and long-time girlfriend from Whitehouse High School — in 2022. They have two children, daughter Sterling Skye and son Patrick 'Bronze' Lavon III. The family lives in the Kansas City area and has become one of the most visible athlete families in the country, with Brittany a co-owner of the Kansas City Current and a frequent presence at Chiefs games. Still in his twenties when he had already won three Super Bowls, Mahomes is firmly on a Hall of Fame trajectory and has positioned himself to remain one of the NFL's defining figures for the rest of the decade.
