Biography
Frederick L. Warner III was born November 19, 1996, in San Marcos, California, and grew up in the San Diego area. His upbringing was shaped by a supportive family and the Southern California football culture, with his father Robert's influence central to his development as both an athlete and a person. He has remained deeply connected to his San Diego roots throughout his NFL career.
Warner attended Mission Hills High School in San Marcos — the same program that produced Chris Olave — where he was a productive but lightly recruited linebacker prospect. He signed with BYU and spent four seasons in Provo, earning first-team all-conference honors and establishing himself as a reliable rather than flashy NFL Draft prospect.
The San Francisco 49ers selected Warner in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, pick 70 overall, and he has spent his entire career in San Francisco. He has developed into one of the most complete linebackers of his generation, earning multiple first-team All-Pro honors and widespread recognition as the best coverage linebacker in the NFL.
Warner has been selected to multiple Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro recognition in multiple consecutive seasons. His combination of instincts, range, coverage skills, and run-defense reliability has made him the defensive leader of the 49ers and the model for modern off-ball linebacker play.
His career résumé includes multiple All-Pro selections, numerous Pro Bowl appearances, a Super Bowl LVIII appearance, and widespread recognition as one of the greatest linebackers of his generation. A Super Bowl championship remains outstanding on an otherwise nearly-complete individual résumé.
Off the field, Warner married Sydney Hightower — a former reality television contestant — in 2022. He has been active with charitable initiatives in both the San Francisco Bay Area and his native Southern California, and he maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other brands. His thoughtful, measured public persona has made him a respected voice in the 49ers' locker room and among NFLPA issues. He runs the Fred Warner Foundation supporting mental health initiatives and youth athletic programs.
