Biography
Lane Michael Johnson was born May 12, 1990, in Groveton, Texas, a tiny East Texas community. His path to NFL stardom is among the more unusual of elite offensive linemen — he began his college career as a quarterback, was moved to tight end, then to defensive end, and finally settled at offensive tackle late in his college years. His winding positional journey has become central to his football biography.
Johnson attended Groveton High School in Texas, where he was under-recruited as a multi-position athlete. He attended Kilgore Junior College before transferring to Oklahoma, where he played tight end and defensive end before switching to offensive tackle for his final college season. His rapid development at the position drew sudden NFL interest and elevated him into first-round draft consideration.
The Philadelphia Eagles selected Johnson fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he has spent his entire career in Philadelphia. He has developed into one of the most dominant right tackles in NFL history, anchoring the Eagles' offensive line during their Super Bowl LII and LIX championship runs.
Johnson has been selected to multiple Pro Bowls and earned multiple first-team All-Pro honors, with widespread recognition as the greatest right tackle of his generation. His three-year stretch of not allowing a single sack in 2020-2022 became the single most astonishing pass-protection streak of the modern era.
His career résumé includes multiple Super Bowl championships (LII, LIX), multiple first-team All-Pro selections, numerous Pro Bowl appearances, and status among the greatest right tackles in NFL history. His consistent elite play across multiple coaching staffs, quarterback generations, and offensive schemes has made him a foundational piece of the Eagles' sustained NFC dominance.
Off the field, Johnson has become one of the most visible NFL players discussing mental health. He was diagnosed with anxiety and depression during his career and has spoken openly about his struggles, becoming an advocate for mental health awareness in professional football locker rooms. He has supported youth football initiatives in both his native East Texas and the Philadelphia community, and he maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other brands. His willingness to be vulnerable about mental health has made him a respected voice across the NFL.
