Biography
Tyler J. 'T.J.' Hockenson was born July 3, 1997, in Chariton, Iowa, a small farming community about 50 miles southeast of Des Moines. His upbringing in rural Iowa was defined by a close family, including his father Jeff, mother Corey, and brother Drake. The small-town Iowa football culture shaped his early development and his deliberately understated public persona — he has remained closely tied to those Iowa roots throughout his NFL career.
Hockenson attended Chariton High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete but not heavily recruited as a football prospect given the rural setting. He signed with Iowa, continuing the Hawkeyes' tight end pipeline that has produced George Kittle, Noah Fant, and several other NFL players. At Iowa he won the 2018 Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end and was a consensus All-American, elevating himself into first-round NFL Draft consideration.
The Detroit Lions selected Hockenson eighth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, the highest-drafted tight end in nearly a decade. After three-plus seasons in Detroit that included a Pro Bowl selection, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, immediately becoming one of the NFC's most productive tight ends in Kirk Cousins's offense.
Hockenson has been selected to multiple Pro Bowls and has posted multiple 700-plus yard receiving seasons. His combination of size, reliable hands, and versatile route running has made him one of the consensus top tight ends in the NFC, and his chemistry with a succession of Vikings quarterbacks has produced consistent production.
His career résumé includes multiple Pro Bowl selections, 700-plus yard receiving seasons, and status as one of the premier receiving tight ends in the NFC. His value is reflected in the contract extension the Vikings signed with him that ranks among the most lucrative at the position.
Off the field, Hockenson has maintained close ties to his Iowa roots and his family. He has supported youth football initiatives in Chariton and the broader Iowa community, and he has been active with the Vikings' community outreach programs. His endorsement portfolio is developing with Nike and other partnerships typical of a young Pro Bowl-level tight end. His grounded, understated public persona has made him a respected voice in locker rooms throughout his career.
