Sam LaPorta

Samuel Edwin LaPorta was born January 12, 2001, in Highland, Illinois, a small community in southwestern Illinois near the Missouri border. He was raised in a family that valued hard work and blue-collar values, traits that have become central to his public persona as an NFL tight end. His Midwestern upbringing placed him in a region that produces fewer high-profile football recruits than traditional hotbeds.

LaPorta attended Highland High School in Illinois, where he was a three-star recruit who developed primarily as a pass-catching tight end in high school. He signed with Iowa — continuing the Hawkeyes' remarkable tight end pipeline — and became one of the most productive receiving tight ends in program history during his four seasons with the Hawkeyes.

The Detroit Lions selected LaPorta in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, pick 34 overall, continuing the Iowa-to-NFL pipeline. He delivered one of the most statistically dominant rookie tight end seasons in NFL history: 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl selection and setting the NFL rookie record for receptions by a tight end.

LaPorta has continued to produce at an elite level and has become a centerpiece of the Lions' offensive resurgence under quarterback Jared Goff and play-caller Ben Johnson.
