Biography
Patrick John Freiermuth was born October 14, 1998, in Merrimac, Massachusetts, and grew up in a close-knit New England family that shaped his Puritan work ethic and public persona. His upbringing in a small Merrimack Valley town and his father Dan's influence as a former college football player fostered his early commitment to the tight end position, a path he pursued through elite New England high school football.
Freiermuth attended Brooks School, a private prep school in North Andover, Massachusetts, where he earned national recruiting attention as one of the top tight ends in the country. He signed with Penn State and spent three seasons with the Nittany Lions, earning Mackey Award semifinalist honors as one of the most productive tight ends in the Big Ten.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Freiermuth in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, pick 55 overall, and he immediately stepped into a featured role. His rookie season produced seven touchdown receptions, and he has since continued to develop into one of the more reliable red zone targets in the AFC across multiple quarterbacks and offensive coordinators.
Freiermuth has been a steady producer across his NFL career with multiple 500-plus yard receiving seasons, and his combination of sure hands, physicality at the catch point, and red zone instincts have made him a consistent centerpiece of the Steelers' offensive identity. His chemistry with quarterbacks Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson, and subsequent starters has produced reliable production across changing circumstances.
His career résumé includes multiple seasons of Pro Bowl-caliber production, consistent red zone production, and status as one of the more durable young tight ends in the AFC. The Steelers signed him to a contract extension in 2024 that reflects his value as a cornerstone offensive piece.
Off the field, Freiermuth has maintained close ties to his New England roots and has supported youth football initiatives in both Massachusetts and the Pittsburgh market. His nickname 'Muth' has become a fan favorite among Steelers supporters, and his understated but physically imposing playing style has made him a respected voice in the team's locker room. He maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other brands, and his consistent on-field production has established him as one of the more reliable young tight ends in the league.
