Penei Sewell

Penei Sewell was born October 9, 2000, in American Samoa, before his family relocated to St. George, Utah, when he was young. He grew up in a remarkable Polynesian-American football family: his older brother Nephi played college football at Utah, and his younger brother Noah plays linebacker in the NFL. The Sewell family's combination of Polynesian heritage and Utah upbringing has shaped Penei's distinctive identity as one of the most respected offensive linemen in the NFL.

Sewell attended Desert Hills High School in Utah, where he emerged as a five-star recruit and the nation's top offensive line prospect. He signed with Oregon and spent three seasons with the Ducks before opting out of the 2020 season. His 2019 Pac-12 campaign earned him the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman — and at age 19 he became the youngest winner in the award's history.

The Detroit Lions selected Sewell seventh overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, and he has become one of the most dominant offensive linemen in the NFL. By his third season he had earned first-team All-Pro honors, and he has been central to the Lions' offensive resurgence under quarterback Jared Goff and a succession of play-callers.

Sewell has been selected to multiple Pro Bowls and earned multiple first-team All-Pro honors, with widespread recognition as one of the top two right tackles in the NFL — if not the best. His combination of pass protection and dominant run blocking has helped transform the Lions from an offensive joke into an NFC powerhouse.

His career résumé already includes multiple first-team All-Pro selections, multiple Pro Bowl appearances, NFC Championship Game appearances, and status as one of the defining offensive linemen of his generation at just 25 years old.

Off the field, Sewell has remained closely tied to his Polynesian-American heritage and family. His younger brother Noah plays linebacker in the NFL, and the Sewell brothers have become one of the most visible Pacific Islander families in professional football. He has supported youth football initiatives in both Utah and Detroit and has been active in Polynesian community initiatives. He maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other major brands, and his 2024 contract extension made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history at the time of signing.
