Biography
Aidan Thomas Hutchinson was born August 9, 2000, in Plymouth, Michigan, into a family with deep Michigan football roots. His father Chris Hutchinson was a team captain and All-American defensive end at Michigan in the early 1990s, creating one of the more direct father-son Michigan football legacies. The family's Wolverines connection shaped Aidan's college choice and remained central to his ascent through the program.
Hutchinson attended Divine Child High School in Dearborn, Michigan, where he was a four-star recruit and one of the top defensive linemen in the Midwest. He signed with Michigan, choosing his father's alma mater over other top programs, and developed into one of the most decorated defenders in program history. His 2021 senior season produced 14 sacks, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, and a Heisman Trophy runner-up finish — among the best by a defensive player in modern college football.
The Detroit Lions selected Hutchinson second overall in the 2022 NFL Draft — a homecoming to the state he had represented at Michigan. He immediately delivered elite rookie production, finishing with 9.5 sacks and earning Pro Bowl and All-Rookie honors. His combination of pedigree, production, and hometown connection made him the face of the Lions' emerging defense.
Hutchinson has been named to Pro Bowls and earned All-Pro consideration, with multiple double-digit sack seasons when healthy. A serious leg injury during the 2024 season interrupted his trajectory but he has continued to be positioned as the defensive cornerstone of the Lions' franchise-reshaping run.
His career résumé includes Pro Bowl selections, Heisman Trophy runner-up status at Michigan, consecutive top-five production among edge rushers, and status as one of the defining young defensive players of his generation.
Off the field, Hutchinson has embraced his Michigan and Detroit-area identity, remaining closely tied to both Michigan football and the Lions community. He has supported youth football initiatives in the Detroit area and has been active with Michigan football alumni programs. His father Chris remains a visible presence in his career. He maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other brands, and his blend of top-tier production, family football legacy, and local roots has made him one of the most beloved players in Lions franchise history.
