Biography
Drake Bentley Maye was born August 30, 2002, in Huntersville, North Carolina, and grew up in a household with unusually deep roots in basketball royalty. His father Mark played football at North Carolina, and his older brother Luke Maye became one of the most beloved North Carolina basketball players of the 2010s, famously hitting the game-winning shot in the 2017 Final Four against Kentucky that sent the Tar Heels to the NCAA championship game. Drake grew up watching his brother's college career and playing multiple sports at a high level himself.
Maye attended Myers Park High School in Charlotte, where he was a top-tier recruit in both football and basketball. He chose football and signed with North Carolina, following his father's footsteps to Chapel Hill. His redshirt sophomore year in 2022 was a breakout, with Maye posting some of the most productive single-season passing numbers in ACC history and earning Maxwell Award finalist status.
The New England Patriots selected Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, continuing a tradition of North Carolina-to-New England quarterback success. He arrived in a franchise still navigating the post-Tom Brady transition and was handed the starting role midway through his rookie season. His combination of size, arm talent, and mobility immediately set him apart as one of the more physically gifted young quarterbacks in the AFC.
Maye's NFL résumé is still in its earliest pages, but his rookie season produced flashes of the elite potential that made him a top-three pick. His ability to extend plays, throw off-platform, and drive the ball to all levels of the field has made him a central piece of the Patriots' rebuild under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, and his developmental trajectory is among the most closely watched in the league.
Maye's family connection to Carolina basketball has kept him tied to Chapel Hill and the ACC culture throughout his career. He has been a frequent presence at Tar Heel basketball games and has maintained close relationships with his brothers Luke, Cole, and Beau, all of whom played college sports at various levels.
Early endorsement partners have included Jordan Brand, Bose, and other brands targeting young quarterbacks. Maye has supported youth football initiatives in both North Carolina and New England, and he has been active in his family's charitable work. With the benefit of a franchise committed to his development and nearly a decade of prime expected to be ahead of him, Maye is one of the most intriguing young quarterbacks in the sport.
