Biography
Joshua Patrick Allen was born May 21, 1996, in Firebaugh, California, a small agricultural town in the San Joaquin Valley. He grew up on his family's cotton and wheat farm, the son of Joel and LaVonne Allen, with an older sister Nicala and younger siblings Jason and Makenna. His upbringing — early mornings on the farm, long drives to games, and a rural community where entertainment was often self-made — is central to how he talks about himself and remains a recurring theme in his media presence as an NFL star.
Allen attended Firebaugh High School, where he was barely recruited despite strong production. Zero Division I scholarship offers arrived; he enrolled at Reedley College, a junior college, and walked on there before eventually landing at the University of Wyoming. In Laramie he transformed from an unknown prospect into one of the most scouted quarterbacks in the country. By his junior year, his rocket arm and 6'5" frame had elevated him into top-of-the-draft conversations, though he remained a polarizing prospect because of shaky accuracy numbers against uneven competition.
The Buffalo Bills traded up to select Allen seventh overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, betting that his physical tools would eventually translate. The payoff was not immediate — his first two seasons were uneven, with accuracy issues and questionable decision-making — but by his third year Allen had authored one of the most dramatic developmental leaps in modern NFL history, throwing for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2020 and earning Pro Bowl honors. He has been in the MVP conversation virtually every season since.
Allen's statistical and on-field résumé has continued to build. He has been named to multiple Pro Bowls, collected MVP honors, and helped the Bills become one of the AFC's most consistent contenders under head coach Sean McDermott. His combination of arm strength, unusual athleticism for a quarterback of his size, and willingness to run through defenders on designed plays has made him one of the sport's most physically imposing players at the position. He remains the centerpiece of an offense built explicitly around his gifts.
Off the field, Allen has parlayed his stardom into significant brand and charitable presence. He became engaged to actress Hailee Steinfeld, with their relationship becoming one of the highest-profile pairings in American sports and entertainment. He supports children's hospital programs through the Oishei Children's Hospital, an effort that began with an emotional Bills fan response to his grandmother's death in 2020, when supporters donated to the hospital in her memory and helped spark an ongoing charitable push. He also maintains major endorsements with New Era, Nike (Jordan Brand), and New Balance.
Allen remains closely tied to his California farming roots and the small-town identity he cultivated at Wyoming. In Buffalo he has become the most beloved athlete in a city where the quarterback position has defined decades of fandom, and his contract extensions with the Bills have made him one of the longest-committed players to a single franchise in the league. Still in his prime and building his Super Bowl pursuit, Allen is on track to become the most accomplished player in Buffalo's modern history.
