Biography
Justin Patrick Herbert was born March 10, 1998, in Eugene, Oregon, and grew up in a household built around sports and education. His parents Mark and Holly raised Justin alongside his two brothers Patrick and Mitchell; Patrick went on to play tight end at Oregon, while Mitchell became a college football quarterback as well. The Herbert family's Eugene roots meant the Oregon Ducks were essentially the hometown team, which would prove significant in Justin's college decision.
Herbert attended Sheldon High School in Eugene, where he was a multi-sport star — quarterback, basketball player, and high-jump competitor in track. Despite being tall and talented, he was considered an under-recruited prospect at quarterback nationally, and ultimately signed with Oregon close to home. There he developed into one of the most statistically productive passers in Pac-12 history, starting as a redshirt freshman and eventually claiming Senior Bowl MVP honors after his final college season.
The Los Angeles Chargers selected Herbert sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he was thrust into the starting role in Week 2 of his rookie season after Tyrod Taylor suffered a complication during pre-game injections. Herbert never gave the job back, setting the NFL rookie record for passing touchdowns (31) and winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. Few quarterbacks in league history have arrived with less ceremony and delivered more immediately.
Herbert has been selected to Pro Bowls and consistently produced at a top-ten level at the position, with multiple 4,000-yard passing seasons and a résumé full of highlight-reel deep balls. His arm talent, prototypical quarterback frame, and willingness to stand in the pocket and deliver under pressure have made him one of the most physically gifted passers in football. Sustained playoff success has proven more elusive, with the Chargers often falling short of their potential around him.
Off the field, Herbert became engaged to broadcaster Taylor Bisciotti in 2024 — her family owns the Baltimore Ravens — creating one of the more interesting league-adjacent storylines of his career. He has remained deliberately low-key in his public presence, rarely seeking the celebrity attention that typically follows players of his stature, and has been praised by teammates and coaches for his preparation and football intelligence.
Herbert maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike, Bose, Subway, Topps, and others, and has contributed to youth football initiatives in Oregon and Southern California. He earned a biology degree at Oregon and has mentioned interests in dentistry and medicine — reflecting the academic orientation of his upbringing. With an MVP season and Super Bowl appearance still on his to-do list, Herbert remains one of the NFL's most watched quarterbacks entering his late twenties.
