Biography
Montez Morris Sweat was born March 27, 1996, in Stone Mountain, Georgia. His upbringing in the Atlanta metropolitan area shaped his football development, and his family's support sustained him through a lengthy college path that eventually led him to NFL stardom. His physical development — 6'6" with exceptional arm length — made him one of the most physically imposing pass rushers of his draft class.
Sweat attended Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he was a three-star recruit. He signed with Michigan State but transferred after academic issues, eventually landing at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi before transferring to Mississippi State. His two seasons at Mississippi State produced All-SEC honors and elevated him into first-round NFL Draft consideration.
The Washington Redskins selected Sweat 26th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his early career in Washington before a midseason 2023 trade to the Chicago Bears transformed both his career and the Bears' defense. His 13-sack season that year earned him his first Pro Bowl selection and a franchise-changing contract extension in Chicago.
Sweat has been a consistent double-digit sack threat when healthy, with his combination of length and quick first step making him one of the more productive edge rushers of his generation. His production has helped anchor both Washington and Chicago defensive units.
His career résumé includes Pro Bowl selection, multiple double-digit sack seasons, and status among the more productive edge rushers of his generation. His 2024 season with the Bears continued his production trajectory and solidified him as the cornerstone of Chicago's defensive rebuild.
Off the field, Sweat has been open about his circuitous path through junior college and eventually Mississippi State, which has made him one of the more inspirational stories at his position. He has supported youth football initiatives in his native Georgia community and in both Washington and Chicago, and he maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike and other brands. His path and production have placed him among the more respected veteran voices among defenders.
