Biography
Myles Lorenz Garrett was born December 29, 1995, in Arlington, Texas, into a family with deep athletic and football roots. His older brother Sean Williams was a first-round NBA Draft pick, and his father is of partial Samoan heritage — a background that has informed some of Garrett's most visible charitable work. He was raised alongside his siblings with strong parental emphasis on education and reading, a passion that has become one of his best-known off-field traits.
Garrett attended Martin High School in Arlington, where he became the Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year and a consensus five-star recruit. He signed with Texas A&M, earning All-American honors and ranking among the most feared pass rushers in SEC history before declaring for the 2017 NFL Draft after his junior season.
The Cleveland Browns selected Garrett first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, making him the franchise's first number one pick in nearly two decades. He has spent his entire career in Cleveland and has become the defensive face of the franchise, winning NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2023 after logging 14 sacks and consistent All-Pro-level production.
Garrett is a multiple-time first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler, with multiple 16-plus sack seasons and recognition as one of the most dominant edge rushers of his generation. His combination of elite speed, length, and hand technique has drawn comparisons to the greatest defensive ends in NFL history, and he has consistently produced at a top-five-league level at his position.
His career résumé includes NFL Defensive Player of the Year, multiple All-Pro selections, Pro Bowl appearances, and a contract that made him one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in NFL history. A Super Bowl ring remains the notable missing line on an otherwise extraordinary individual résumé.
Off the field, Garrett is a famously avid reader — his love of books has been repeatedly profiled — and he has spoken about his interest in paleontology, with plans to pursue that field after football. He runs the Flash Kids reading and literacy initiative, supports paleontology and museum-related causes, and maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike, Lowe's, and other major brands. He has been open about his Samoan heritage and has supported Polynesian youth football initiatives throughout his career.
