Biography
James Edward Conner was born May 5, 1995, in Erie, Pennsylvania, and his path to NFL stardom is one of the most inspiring in the modern league. His childhood was shaped by his parents and his close-knit family in the Erie area. His career has been defined repeatedly by resilience — first his battle against a serious cancer diagnosis in college, and later his ability to recover from NFL injuries and emerge as a consistent featured running back.
Conner attended McDowell High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was a productive but lightly recruited prospect. He signed with Pittsburgh and spent four seasons with the Panthers, becoming one of the most productive running backs in school history. During his 2015 season he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a battle he fought concurrently with a torn MCL while continuing to pursue his football future. He beat cancer, returned for his senior season, and was drafted by the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Conner in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, pick 105 overall. He stepped into Le'Veon Bell's role when Bell held out and delivered a Pro Bowl season, becoming a fan favorite in Pittsburgh both for his production and for his cancer-survivor story. He later signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 and became a key leader in their offense.
Conner has been selected to Pro Bowls and has posted multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons across both the Steelers and Cardinals. His combination of power running, reliable pass protection, and veteran leadership has made him one of the most respected running backs of his generation.
His career résumé includes Pro Bowl selections, the Comeback Player of the Year award for his cancer recovery story, and consistent production across multiple franchises. His resilience through cancer and injury has made him one of the most inspirational stories in the modern NFL.
Off the field, Conner has been a visible advocate for cancer research and has supported the James Conner Foundation, which funds research, education, and patient support initiatives. His cancer battle has been featured in multiple documentaries and media profiles. He has remained closely tied to Erie and Pittsburgh community initiatives, and he maintains endorsement partnerships with Nike, Subway, and other brands. His story continues to inspire cancer patients and young athletes alike.
