Biography
Tuanigamanuolepola Tagovailoa was born March 2, 1998, in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, into a family defined by Samoan heritage, football tradition, and Christian faith. His parents Galu and Diane raised Tua alongside his younger brother Taulia, who went on to quarterback Maryland. The Tagovailoa family's migration from Hawaii to Alabaster, Alabama, when Tua was a teenager — made specifically so he could compete for an SEC quarterback opportunity — has become a defining story of family sacrifice in recent college football lore.
Tagovailoa attended Saint Louis School in Honolulu, one of Hawaii's premier prep football programs and the alma mater of Marcus Mariota and other Polynesian-American quarterbacks. He signed with Alabama and famously won the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship as a true freshman, replacing Jalen Hurts at halftime and throwing the overtime touchdown pass that beat Georgia — one of the most dramatic and decisive title-game performances in the sport's modern history.
The Miami Dolphins selected Tagovailoa fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, despite a serious hip injury suffered in his final college season that had led some teams to drop him on their boards. His career in Miami has been defined by both on-field excellence — he led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 — and a troubling series of concussions that sparked one of the most extensive medical and public safety conversations in recent NFL history.
Tagovailoa's on-field résumé includes Pro Bowl selection, league passing yard leadership, and a run as the offensive centerpiece of Mike McDaniel's innovative Dolphins schemes. His partnership with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and an explosive receiving corps produced some of the most electric passing displays of the early 2020s. He has since transitioned to the Atlanta Falcons, where he joins an NFC offense looking for veteran stability.
Tagovailoa married Annah Gore in 2022, his college girlfriend from his Alabama days, and the couple has a son, Ace. The family has remained deeply connected to both Tua's Hawaiian roots and their Alabama college community, and Tua has been a steady presence in Hawaiian-American community initiatives in both the Miami area and more recently Atlanta. His religious faith is a frequent subject in his public comments.
Tagovailoa holds endorsements with Wingstop, Muscle Milk, Sleep Number, and other brands, and he has been a prominent voice in player-safety conversations following his repeated head injuries. He has been open about the emotional and physical toll those moments have taken and has worked with league medical staff on return-to-play protocol refinements. A left-handed passer whose career has been defined by his release quickness, processing, and accuracy, Tagovailoa remains one of the most recognizable Pacific Islander stars in NFL history.
