Biography
Jared Thomas Goff was born October 14, 1994, in Novato, California, and grew up in the Bay Area in a baseball-obsessed household. His father Jerry Goff was a Major League Baseball catcher whose career included stops with the Expos, Astros, and Pirates, and his mother Nancy raised him alongside his sister Lauren. Goff's early athletic life was split between baseball and football, but he committed to the latter by high school and became a standout at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, where he led the program to multiple playoff appearances.
Goff chose the University of California, Berkeley, over several larger-program offers and started as a true freshman — a rarity in Power Five football. He developed under head coach Sonny Dykes into one of the most productive passers in program history, setting school records for passing yards and touchdowns and drawing Heisman Trophy attention as a junior. His size, arm, and advanced pre-snap processing made him the consensus top quarterback prospect in the 2016 NFL Draft.
The Los Angeles Rams traded up to select Goff first overall in 2016, making him the face of the franchise's move back to Los Angeles from St. Louis. His rookie season under head coach Jeff Fisher was a struggle, but the hiring of Sean McVay in 2017 transformed both Goff and the organization. Under McVay he was selected to consecutive Pro Bowls, led the Rams to Super Bowl LIII following the 2018 season, and became one of the highest-paid players in the league.
A shift in the Rams' plan led to a January 2021 trade that sent Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford. What looked like a demotion at the time has since become one of the signature success stories of the modern NFL. Goff has authored a quietly historic turnaround in Detroit, earning additional Pro Bowl honors, setting franchise single-season passing records, and playing a central role in the Lions' ascension from decades of futility into NFC contention.
On the field, Goff has been one of the most consistently productive passers in the league during his Detroit tenure, known for his precision timing with Amon-Ra St. Brown and his ability to work within Ben Johnson's and subsequent offensive coordinators' schemes. He has led the Lions to their first NFC Championship Game appearance in decades and has cemented himself as one of the most important figures in the modern history of the franchise.
Off the field, Goff is married to model and television personality Christen Harper, whose Sports Illustrated Swimsuit modeling work and media presence have made the couple one of the more visible pairings in NFL social life. They live in the Detroit area during the season and maintain offseason residences on the West Coast. Goff is also active in youth football initiatives in both California and Michigan, and his quiet, understated public persona has become a defining trait — perhaps the exact counterweight to the headlines that accompanied his Rams-era career.
