Biography
Justin Lamar Jefferson was born June 16, 1999, in St. Rose, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans, into a family of football players that made his career path feel almost inevitable. His father John Jefferson Sr. played college football at Northern Iowa, and his older brothers Jordan and Rickey both played at LSU — Jordan as a starting quarterback during the program's 2011 run to the BCS Championship Game. Growing up in a household where LSU football was a constant backdrop shaped Justin's early ambitions.
Jefferson attended Destrehan High School in southeastern Louisiana, where he was a three-star recruit who fell slightly under the radar despite his clear talent. He signed with LSU, following his brothers into Baton Rouge, and became a central piece of Joe Burrow's 2019 national championship team. That LSU campaign — arguably the greatest offensive season in college football history — saw Jefferson catch 111 passes for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns, elevating him into first-round NFL Draft consideration.
The Minnesota Vikings selected Jefferson 22nd overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he immediately redefined the rookie wide receiver bar. His rookie campaign of 1,400 receiving yards broke Randy Moss's rookie Vikings record, and he has since posted statistical seasons that rank among the greatest in NFL history at the position. He set the record for most receiving yards through a player's first four seasons.
Jefferson has earned first-team All-Pro honors multiple times and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 after leading the league with 1,809 receiving yards — the most by any player age 23 or younger in league history. His combination of route precision, elite ball skills, and after-the-catch ability has made him the consensus top wide receiver in the NFL. The Vikings signed him to the largest non-quarterback contract in NFL history in 2024.
His career résumé already includes multiple first-team All-Pro selections, multiple Pro Bowl appearances, Offensive Player of the Year honors, and a reputation as one of the most complete receivers of his generation. His acrobatic catches — including the 'fourth-and-18' game-winning grab against Buffalo that has been called one of the greatest catches in NFL history — have become staples of highlight reels.
Off the field, Jefferson has become one of the NFL's most recognizable personalities, thanks in part to his 'Griddy' celebration dance that he brought from his LSU days into the NFL and eventually licensed through major sports video game franchises. He maintains endorsements with Nike's Jordan Brand, Gatorade, EA Sports, and numerous other partners, and he has supported youth football initiatives in his native Louisiana through the Justin Jefferson Foundation. His extended family — particularly his brothers — remain a visible presence at Vikings games.
